Police Cadet Recruitment

Our latest campaign to recruit the next round of police cadets to Northumbria Police has begun.

New police cadets join as part of a three-year scheme which is specifically designed for those developmental teenage years – and we are looking for new starters in Northumberland.

The role is like no other and sees young people introduced to the world of policing, working with serving officers in the community and getting involved with some of the region’s biggest events such as Pride Festivals, The Great North Run, Northumberland County Fairs, and so much more.

Some important criteria for our budding police cadets include that they must:

  • Be in school year 9 or 10 at the start of the course, meaning they are turning 14 or 15 during the academic year.

  • Live in the Northumbria Police Force area because our cadets will be heavily involved with your local community.

  • Applications are now open for successful candidates to start the role in September 2024. You can find out more on our Northumbria Police careers website.

After sending off an application form, candidates will be asked to take part in an informal interview with a cadet leader.

    Frequently asked questions…

When and where do cadets meet?

Cadets usually meet once a week for a couple of hours and there is also an expectation to volunteer on top of these meetings. Most cadet meetings are not held in police stations and will vary based on the cadet area.

Does the parent/carer need to pay for a cadet uniform?

Northumbria Police provide cadet uniform free of charge, provided it is cared for.

My child has a disability, can they still join?

Yes. Northumbria Police will ensure all members can reach their full potential. We will be guided by the young person, and their parents/carers on what adjustments we can make to help support your journey with us.
